Importation of Radiation-Emitting Products: Product Code Status Update

This announcement is to inform manufacturers, imports agents, brokers, and other interested parties that the old product codes for radiation-emitting products have been revised to be more specific and accurate. All imports filers recently received Administrative Message 06-0937 about these changes.

The new product codes can now be used for various radiation-emitting electronic products, such as laser products, microwave ovens, television receivers, medical x-ray systems, sunlamp products and ultrasound therapy products. The old codes should be discontinued by the end of calendar year 2006, at which point import documentation filed with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) must reference the new codes only. Once the product codes are end-dated, import entries transmitted electronically via CBP's ABI system, using the old codes will be rejected by FDA.

Below is a spreadsheet showing the 25 old codes and corresponding new codes that have been created to replace them. Unlike the old codes, the new codes allow differentiation among medical and non-medical products, type of radiation emitted, and specific product types within a product class. You should select the new codes which most specifically describe your product.

To access the product code system, you may go directly to the FDA Product Code Builder website. The product code builder contains all new codes that can be used immediately. Please note the product code tutorial lists obsolete codes and should be updated shortly.
