Background:

On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) will host a virtual symposium for members of the veterinary community to learn more about CVM’s role and how the center uses a One Health approach to protect human and animal health. 

The One Health approach advocates for a comprehensive approach to health and environmental problems by developing interdisciplinary collaborations to benefit all species.

The symposium will feature a fireside chat between CVM’s Center Director, Ms. Tracey Forfa, and FDA Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Tristan Colonius, and four talks from center experts: 

  • “One Health and Innovation: FDA’s Regulation of Animal Biotechnology Products” – Commander Jan Linkenhoker, DVM, MPH, DACLAM, US Public Health Service, Division of Biotechnology, CVM Office of New Animal Product Evaluation; and Carlo Jose Mercado, PhD, Acting Branch Chief, Division of Applied Veterinary Research, CVM Office of Applied Science  
  • “One Health in Drug Safety Surveillance at CVM” – Christopher Loss, DVM, Branch Chief, Division of Pharmacovigilance and Surveillance, CVM Office of Surveillance and Compliance 
  • “Innovation and One Health in Animal Food Ingredients: FDA’s Regulation of Novel Animal Foods” - David Edwards, MS, PhD, Director, Division of Animal Food Ingredients, CVM Office of Surveillance and Compliance 
  • “All Creatures Great and Small…A One Health Approach for Minor Uses and Minor Species” - Dorothy Bailey, DVM, Director, CVM Office of Minor Use and Minor Species

This program has been approved by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards Registry of Approved Continuing Education (AAVSB-RACE) for (4) hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval. Continuing education credits will only be granted for attendants of the live session and not for viewing the recording.

On November 18, 2024, registration for the FDA CVM One Health Symposium will be closed. After the event, the center will post the link to the recording and transcript on this web page. Please note that RACE credit is only available for those who attend the live event.
