Division of Applied Mechanics

Who We Are

The Division of Applied Mechanics (DAM) within CDRH’s Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL) identifies and uses applied mechanics to investigate interactions between the human body and medical devices or radiation-emitting products.

What We Do

The Division focuses on issues related to the following areas:

  • Additive manufacturing (such as 3-D printing)
  • Cardiovascular
  • Credibility assessment in modeling
  • Materials chemistry and mechanical performance
  • Medical Acoustics
  • Microfluidics
  • Neurology
  • Orthopedics
  • Post-market signal response

The technical disciplines of the Division’s staff include mechanical engineering, materials science, biomedical engineering, general engineering, mathematics, medical radiology, and physics.
