To successfully conduct our mission of protecting and advancing public health, FDA must be ready for the emerging issues and scientific discoveries that will affect the products we regulate 5 to 10 years before regulatory submissions reach our door.

To be able to anticipate the "next new thing," FDA has been asking its scientific leadership and that of other government agencies that fund research, evaluate patent submissions, and develop scientific policy for the Federal government to scan the horizon for future trends in science and technology.

FDA wants to understand how these new areas of science will have an impact on our mission--even when these trends are currently unknown to most scientists!

FDA is also seeking ideas from science and technology experts in the private sector about what they envision to be the next major breakthrough in their area of specialization, such as suspended animation for surgery.
