Nanotechnology Research at NCTR
Nanotechnology, the manipulation of material at nanoscale dimensions is a challenging scientific area where specific tools are needed to characterize and detect the nanoscale materials. Recent advances have allowed scientists the ability to visualize, manipulate, and control matter of this size and use it in the development of novel drug products, and vaccines. The FDA has already reviewed and approved many nanotechnology-based products, and expects a significant increase in the use of nanoscale materials in medical products. NCTR scientists are conducting research on:
- Material characterization and detection methods for capacity-building of scientists and reviewers
- International standards development
- In vitro and in vivo studies on emerging and generic drug products
- Effects on microbiota and microbiome
- Safety and efficacy of nanocrystalline drug products
- Immunotoxicity and genetic toxicology of nanomaterials
The NCTR Nanotechnology Core Facility (Nanocore) is located at the FDA’s Jefferson Arkansas Laboratories and is equipped with instrumentation and laboratories with a goal to meet the needs of FDA to understand the toxicity and biological impact of nanoscale materials.
